A lot of good thoughts and opinions circulating. One that has struck me the most is when Tom addressed the issue of comparing the shopping experience of online and offline. He characterizes the WWW as a public domain so in that perspective, is it really fair to have something monitored or private??
You have a choice of what you put on the internet. If you are concerned with your privacy then do not take the traditional route of trying to obtain something via the internet. "Digital enclosure" means privatization of information. This is a direct correlation to the point Mark Andrejevic is making.
Is it crossing the line when your email exchanges and cell phone conversations are being monitored without your knowledge?

I think it is crossing the line to have email and cell phone calls listened to. At least those two were developed with the intention of the conversation having the ability to be private. You can feel that the Internet was or was not meant to be private in terms of posting a picture online (of you in a corset). But I'm quite sure email's intentions were to keep the conversation between only those receiving/sending
As I understand it, HWS claims ownership of all email stored on HWS servers.
Jen: what about this, communication that is sent by a designated person to a designated person or people is meant to be protected communication, not available to corporations to use for data-mining or for the government to peruse without a warrant.
I also agree that phone conversations and emails should be private and other people should not interfere with that. However, it is our fault that we do not do anything about it. When we know what is going on we should object, or educate others but we don´t. At that point we are as wrong as the people or companies doing the surveillance.

Yes very true Merel... It is one thing to complain and discuss as much as one chooses, but no progress will be made without any real action or objection. For that I agree with your reasoning.
Sometimes I wonder what the other side thinks. Or the companies that store countless amounts of info and surveille consumers for a pure profit. Maybe they think we are crazy and out of our minds to think our privacy is being breeched. This could be a good way of approaching the creative project.
