Update...

I had the privilege today of seeing a political discussion held at the local Geneva Public Library. Guest speaking was Professor Lucas about various issues spanning across the ongoing campaigns. Specifically focusing as well on the issues that are not addressed by either Obama or McCain. We discussed the internet briefly and how blogs have been playing a role. As a student of Professor Lucas' Political Parties I felt engaged into the topic of the two very different approaches that the campaigns have taken. Obama from the beginning has spearheaded a strategic approach which emphasizes a common message and theme. Usually every week they focus on a different theme and do not deviate from that. This structured approach is consistent and the underlying idea is him reaching out to the people. On the other hand, John McCain has taken on a bit more radical and aggressive approach referred to as tactical. The tactical approach is more hands on with a bigger pay off, but more risk comes with the bargain. He has danced around several issues through short time spans and develops the image of being the competitor.

Both approaches have their pros and cons. Obama's consistency does not allow him to stray away from what is at hand which makes it difficult for him to defend himself sometimes. Instead he will dodge the question or switch topics.

On another note for those who have been paying attention to the debates... I find both of their behaviors and mannerisms interesting to follow. At the last debate which was a town forum set up, McCain was seen pacing throughout his speech even when Obama was talking. When McCain was speaking, Obama was sitting down, looking at McCain, and listening or at least presenting the image that he was listening to him. These striking differences say a lot about how the candidate is feeling at the moment. How confident and nervous they may be. I personally enjoy the debates for this reason as it allows the audience to see more than just the words.

Ah, I had to work they day of that event so I couldn't go. It sounded really great, judging from your blog. I also never quite noticed the McCain pacing and Obama listening consciously until you mentioned it. I agree, good observation.
